Intercultural week'Improving Government Services to Minority Ethnic Groups' 19-25 March is Intercultural and Anti-Racist Week in Ireland, North and South.

Intercultural Week 2007 provides an important opportunity for statutory, non-government, social partner, media, sport, youth and community and voluntary sector organisations to organise events and develop initiatives which celebrate diversity in Ireland, North and South. This week should also be used to develop and initiate long-term intercultural and anti-racism programmes.

This year the theme of the week is ‘Improving Government Services to Minority Ethnic Groups’ focusing on:

• Health
• Education
• Employment
• Housing
• Policing

Intercultural and Anti-Racist Week 2007 will provide a focus on Government departments and agencies as well as local and regional authorities in terms of the delivery of effective services to Black and minority ethnic groups, including migrant workers and Travellers. In recent years significant improvements have been made in these areas but gaps and deficiencies in service provision remain and need to be addressed. Whilst there is a focus on Government services this is not to the exclusion of other important areas of work on anti-racist and intercultural initiatives. The week should also be used by non-government organisations to take a stand against racism by developing sector based initiatives and working collaboratively to effectively address racism in Northern Ireland and to promote the positive benefits of interculturalism for our society.

Anticipated Outcomes of the Week

1. Initiatives which address the gaps and barriers that prevent minority ethnic groups (including migrant workers and Travellers) from accessing services.

2. Greater engagement between the statutory sector, social partners and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) working with minority ethnic groups

3. Development of positive action measures in health, education, employment, housing and policing; such as recruitment into the public services and improving language, translation and interpretive services as well as initiatives in schools and colleges
