Mindful that sectarian, racist, homophobic insults and attacks are a feature of life in Northern Ireland for members of many minority groups, Kilcranny House has organised a conference to look at the issues and explore effective approaches to reducing hate crime.

Hate crime can spread fear among whole communities, and sow seeds of mistrust and division. While policing has an important role to play, hate crime raises questions about the prevailing attitudes in our society which still need to be addressed. We believe that more can be done to make Northern Ireland safe for everyone.

Speakers include Gerry Kelly MLA and Richard Benjamin, Director of the ‘Nil by Mouth’ anti-sectarian project based in Glasgow. Nil by Mouth has been involved in successful awareness-raising campaigns especially surrounding sectarianism in football.

Workshops on strategies for reducing hate crime:

1. Running an awareness-raising campaign. Facilitated by Richard Benjamin
2. Taster session of ‘ending hate crime’ training. Facilitated by Jennie Robinson, Kilcranny House.
3. Out on the streets – practical approaches to preventing violence. Facilitated by (to be confirmed)
4. Something had to be done: story of the SEEDS project, Derry / Londonderry. Facilitated by Eddie Kerr.

There will also be multicultural entertainment and discussion groups looking specifically at sectarianism, racism and homophobia.
