The seminar is taking place as part of Community Relations Week, a Northern Ireland-wide programme of over 150 events organized by the Community Relations Council.

It will focus on three specific Ulster People's College (UPC) programmes that have directly addressed the issue of dealing with the past.

  1. The People’s History initiative
  2. A conflict resolution programme run in partnership with ex-prisoner groups, and
  3. The college’s long standing Certificate in Community Relations.

Dr Eamon Phoenix, historian, journalist and lecturer, will comment on the College’s experience and place it in a wider historical context examining how people have understood and dealt with the past throughout Irish history.

What the seminar will cover

A number of issues will be explored including

  • enabling people to explore the past safely;
  • the role of history and memory;
  • the relationship between individual experience and structural/ societal responses to dealing with the past;
  • reconciliation and peace building.

Who should attend?

The seminar is free and open to all. The UPC would like to encourage participation by those whose organisations are currently involved in supporting others to explore the past as part of a process of addressing the legacy of the conflict in our society or are keen to engage in this work.
